Letters to the Editor
Sir, Mushirul Hasan's article ``To Arafat in anguish'' (April 9) reminds me of Daulat Khan who, in A.D. 1524, invited the Moghul emperor Babar to invade India and save the country from the misrule of Ibrahim Lodi. The article reads like a long petition addressed to Ya Abu Ammar (Arafat) on the despicable state of affairs we are in. Are conditions getting ripe for yet another invasion? Mr. Hasan is trying to portray Mr. Arafat as a leader of Muslims which he is not. It is also doubtful whether he will ever like to take on this role. In his tumultuous and chequered political career, Mr. Arafat has been the chosen leader of the Palestinian people. The world leaders have recognised him as such. If Mr. Hasan wants to tell Mr. Arafat the story of contemporary events in this country, let him tell the full story. Tell him how seventy-odd people including women and children were burnt alive in closed railway compartments. Tell him how innocent people are shot dead almost daily in Kashmir by terrorists. Tell him that lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits have been driven out of their homes in what amounts to ethnic cleansing.
A.B.S. Menon,
