Tata Tele's TN plans

CHENNAI APRIL 18. Tata Teleservices (TTL) will commence basic telecom services in Tamil Nadu in the third quarter of this year. It will initially launch its services in major cities including Chennai and Coimbatore, covering up to 25 cities in phase I by mid-2003. It will cover entire Tamil Nadu in a structured manner over the next seven years.

Addressing a press conference here today, Managing Director of TTL, S. Ramakrishnan, said the company planned to invest Rs. 1,000 crores for its basic telecom services in the Tamil Nadu circle in the first five years. The company was working towards deploying 2,000 km backbone network in the State, which would enable it to carry large volumes of voice and data traffic along key routes. He said through Tata Internet Services, which was in the process of being merged with TTL, a suite of data products were being marketed in Tamil Nadu.
