India welcomes Zahir Shah's return

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 18. India today welcomed the return of the former Afghan King, Zahir Shah, to his country and cited this as "another step'' that will help build a united Afghanistan. "We look forward to the former King playing a unifying role as the new Afghanistan emerges from the clutches of fundamentalism, obscurantism and terrorism,'' the Foreign Office spokesperson in a statement said. The statement said the former monarch and his family had maintained excellent relations with India. "We also remained in contact over the past decades as various efforts were made to bring Afghanistan out of the conflict situation.''
