Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By K. T. Sangameswaran
Another news which should bring cheer to the ministerial staff members of the police department is that the Government has notified the quota for their dependants in police recruitment. When the selection of 1,638 grade-II constables was set in motion this year nearly five years after the last recruitment of women personnel the initial response from candidates was considered `poor'. The small number of applications caused concern to authorities as the Government planned to post a woman unit, consisting of a sub-inspector and two constables in each circle headquarters. Two possible reasons for the poor response were a lowering of the age limit from 27 to 24 and the physical endurance test. However, the situation improved and 41,000 applications were received before the last date for receipt of applications, April 10. Home Department sources say the condition that candidates successfully complete 1,500-metre running in five minutes was considered ``too stringent''. Hence, the Government has decided to increase the duration to seven minutes. Also, the time for completing a five-km run for men recruits has been increased from 20 to 23 minutes.
