He was giving away the eventh annual INTACH Heritage Awards at a function here on Thursday. The Governor narrated his own personal experience of how a heritage structure needs to be preserved by citing the way the ceiling of his room in Raj Bhavan was restored. Dr.Rangarajan had shifted from the main room of Raj Bhavan sometime ago as the plaster of a portion had peeled off. The originality of the ceiling had been restored by using the right mix of mortar by conservationists. ``I have since moved to the main room. You can have a look at the way the ceiling was restored on your next visit to the Raj Bhavan'', he told a gathering consisting of conservationists and heritage lovers. The award-winning heritage structures are: Afzal Mahal of Chow Mohalla Complex, Musa Burj of Golconda Fort, Rang Bagh of Nanakramguda, Malani Residence at Begumpet, All Saints Church at Trimulghery and Gun Rock at Trimulghery. The Governor said the needs of an expanding population should be met without destroying the historicity. Some buildings would have to be preserved at any cost because of their extreme historical significance. Some may be relocated while in the case of others, some modifications can be made. On the whole, urban and city planners must be imbued with a sense of history while drawing their plans. INTACH AP convenor Shravan Kumar said a trust is proposed to be set up with a Rs 50 lakh corpus fund sanctioned by the Governor to INTACH. A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister requesting him to add teeth to regulations for preserving heritage buildings. The Governor released Heritage Annual 2002 on the occasion. A documentary of heritage sites in the city was screened.
