We having nothing further to do: EC

By Our Special Correspondent

Coimbatore April 18 . The Election Commission has no role to play about alleged violation of rules by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, when she filed nominations for four constituencies in the March, 2001 Assembly elections, the Chief Election Commissioner, J. M. Lyngdoh, indicated here today.

He was asked by mediapersons what the EC proposed to do about the petition filed by C. K. Kuppusamy, DMK MP, in the Madras High Court urging it to direct the CEC to initiate action against Ms.Jayalalithaa for her alleged violation of the provisions of the Representation of the People Act.

(The petitioner also alleged that despite an EC communique asking the Chief Electoral Officer to ''examine the matter for appropriate action'', the latter did not initiate any action against her)All that the CEC said was '' there was some correspondence. We don't have anything further to do''.

To a question on the May 31 byelections in the Saidapet,Vaniyambadi and Acharapakkam constituencies. Mr. Lyngdoh said ``verification of electoral rolls is on''.
