Quake hits New York

New York: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit northeast United States, including the city of New York, early on Saturday waking up people and rattling windows, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The moderate quake hit around 0650 hrs (1620 IST) and was centred about 25 km southwest of Pittsburgh, in northern New York near the Vermont and Canadian borders, US Geological Survey said. Initial reports said a rural road in the town of Ausable, 20 km south of Pittsburgh had collapsed partially. William Ott, a seismologist at Weston Observatory at Boston College, said the quake was `moderate'. ``There are faults all over the northeastern United States. They're not as active as the ones in California, but they're capable of producing earthquakes of this size from time to time,'' Mr. Ott said. — PTI
