Describing the book as a "historic one in our historic time'', the President said the tone and tenor was set in the first chapter itself wherein Mr. Rao had written about secularism, non-alignment and removal of poverty. Referring to Mr. Rao's musings on opening avenues for the younger generation and tapping the genius of people, Mr. Narayanan said his former colleague in the Union Cabinet had these convictions when the economic reforms were undertaken on a large-scale in 1991. Among those who attended the function were the former Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the former Election Commissioner, G. V. G. Krishnamurthy.
