Major upset in French polls

Paris April 21. Extreme right wing presidential candidate, Jean Marie Le Pen, created a major upset today when he came second in the first round of the French presidential poll with 17 per cent of the vote, just behind incumbent Gaullist President, Jacques Chirac. The Socialist Prime Minister, Lionel Jospin, came third with 16 per cent of the vote. There was a record rate of abstention with almost 30 per cent of the electorate staying away from the polls.
