As per Rule 125 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, it is mandatory for drivers and frontseat passengers to wear (safety) belts. A Union Government notification has also stated the manufacturers of motor vehicles (other than heavy passenger vehicles, motorcycles and three-wheelers of engine capacity not exceeding 500 CC) should equip the vehicle with a seat belt for the driver and frontseat occupants. Pointing to the increasing road accidents that cost ``precious lives'', the release said the Union Government had issued a notification about wearing of seat belts to protect drivers and frontseat passengers from being thrown out of the vehicle or getting hit against the steering wheel.
