Transfers routine: Minister

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI April 24. The Government today denied that there was any violation of the poll code in the transfer of officials in Saidapet and Vaniyambadi, where byelections are scheduled for May 31.

It was a routine annual transfer and there was no motive behind it, the Local Administration Minister, C. Durairaj, said replying to a special calling attention motion raised by members of the DMK, the Tamil Maanila Congress, the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the BJP in the Assembly. In the process of the routine transfer, came the poll announcement. As the Government had nothing to do with the transfers, there was no need for it to hide anything. Moreover, the Chief Electoral Officer was conducting an enquiry into the transfers following complaints received from Opposition parties and any further explanation by him at this stage would amount to interfering with the enquiry, said Mr. Durairaj.
