``The press has to rise to the occasion to be independent and guide the nation properly and effectively during this hour of crisis rather than get themselves involved in mundane controversial issues, which are insignificant,'' Mr. Reddy said, delivering the keynote address at a seminar on ``Challenges to the Print Media in the New Millennium,'' here. The newspapers must stand firmly by the nation and for the nation, he said, adding that the press should take the lead in nation-building activities. The main challenge for the media in the new millennium would be to save freedom which had been attained after great sacrifice and in turn to save democracy. The press can assist in the implementation of development programmes meant for alleviating poverty, health, education and can encourage new techniques and innovations in agriculture, he added. Mr. Reddy attributed the extremist violence, unfriendly neighbours, the Kashmir problem, criminalisation of politics, corruption, and bankruptcy of statesmenship for the fall in morals. PTI
