BJP expels 6 Orissa MLAs

By Prafulla Das

BHUBANESWAR APRIL 26. Six Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs in Orissa were today expelled from the party for signing as proposers in the nomination papers of the former Union Minister, Dilip Ray, who successfully contested the biennial Rajya Sabha polls as an independent candidate last month.

The MLAs were expelled for their anti-party activities.

"By signing as proposers of an independent candidate, they had brought disrepute to the party'', the party said in a press release. The expelled MLAs are Gourahari Nayak, Bhanu Charan Nayak, Laxman Soren and Surendra Kuanr; and Padma Charan Haiburu and Purushottam Nayak. Haiburu and Purushottam Nayak had joined as associate members of the party after winning the Assembly polls as BJP rebels.

It may be recalled that a few days after the Rajya Sabha polls, the Congress had suspended three of its MLAs — Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Kartik Mahapatra and Mamata Madhi — for signing as proposers of Mr. Ray.

Mr. Ray, who fought the polls as an independent after being denied a Biju Janata Dal ticket, had ensured his re-entry into the Upper House as legislators from all major parties cross-voted in his favour.
