Tamil Nadu

The DPI would have ``seat-adjustments'' with the Left, the TMC and the Congress if they formed an ``alternative front'', its convener, R.Tirumavalavan, told the media here. But the party would field its own candidates if a front opposed to both the DMK and the AIADMK was not formed, said the DPI leader, who held discussions with the TNCC president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan. The party would undertake an agitation in Chennai on May 9 protesting the ``murder of democracy'' in the reserved Keeripatti and Pappapatti in Madurai district where caste Hindus forced the elected panchayat presidents to resign. The ``silence'' of the Tamil Nadu Government and political parties to the happenings in the two villages was condemnable, the party central committee said, in a resolution. It urged the Government to ban the Vanniar Sangam-sponsored annual Chitra Pournami festival at Mamallapuram, which sparked violence recently.
