Khurana made Delhi's `prabhari'

By Neena Vyas

NEW DELHI MAY 3. In yet another measure of the ongoing reshuffle in the Bharatiya Janata Party, Madan Lal Khurana, a former Delhi Chief Minister, has been given the responsibility for political affairs of the capital as `prabhari.'

Another former Delhi Chief Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, who has been Mr. Khurana's main rival in BJP's Delhi politics, has been given similar responsibility in Rajasthan, while Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, a party secretary, has been given charge of Haryana.

The position given to Mr. Khurana is a challenge after the BJP's recent poll debacle in the municipal corporation elections.

His job would be to turn the party's popularity rating and its electoral fortunes when the Assembly polls are held here by November 2003.

The party is hoping that Mr. Khurana will be able to deliver, but he is certain to demand that he be given a free hand.

However, it is known that Mr. Khurana would like to see a man of his choice installed as the president of the party's Delhi unit.

If the present incumbent, Mange Ram Garg, remains in his job, the factionalism in the party could get worse.

That change may not take place immediately, but certainly by the end of the year, if not earlier.
