The Trinamool is readying itself to resist any move by the Railways to evict settlers along tracks in areas such as Dhakuria and Lake Gardens in the heart of south Kolkata. The party is "ready with its suicide'' squad made up of 36 party activists. This apart, it has marked six locations where it would stage sit-in demonstrations. Its army of workers are directed by Ms. Banerjee, currently in New Delhi, to keep round-the-clock vigil so that the police cannot swoop down on them unnoticed. The proposed drive which is expected to remove at least 1,200 shanties along the tracks, has generated a great deal of interest as it involves the Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar, and Ms. Banerjee, both partners in the ruling NDA at the Centre.
