Bar bids farewell to CJI

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI May 3. The Chief Justice of India, S.P. Bharucha, today called upon the Bar and the judges to function independently and fearlessly to protect the rights of the citizens.

Mr. Justice Bharucha, who was given a farewell by the Supreme Court Bar and other judges on the eve of his superannuation, reminded the Bar that it was as much a custodian like the Supreme Court in protecting the fundamental rights of the citizens.

Responding to the felicitations from the Bar that he was a ``fearless and upright judge with unmatched integrity'', Mr. Justice Bharucha said ``As a judge, I have done no more than doing justice as I saw it without fear, favour or affection, that, I think all judges do. Therefore, I deserve no more than the other judges.''

He said he was leaving the Supreme Court in the able hands of Justice B.N. Kirpal (who is to be sworn-in as the Chief Justice on Monday) in whose leadership the court would achieve much greater heights.

Paying tributes to the qualities of Mr. Justice Bharucha, Mr. Justice Kirpal said ``as a member of his team, I can say that he led from the front like a good captain in the cricket field.
