The CET Cell is opening special 24-hour counters on Tuesday and Wednesday at its office in Malleswaram ahead of the examinations that are to be held on May 9 and 10. Personnel at these counters are expected to attend to all queries and complaints regarding admission tickets and examination procedures. These help desks will be of great use to candidates coming from outside the State who often feel lost on their first visit to Bangalore. Meanwhile the CET Cell has completed the process of dispatching admission tickets and is working to make sure the examinations are conducted smoothly. A record number of 1.54 lakh students have applied for the CET this year. About 60,000 candidates are from outside Karnataka. Out of the 317 examination centres, 193 are in Bangalore where 86,000 students are likely to take the test for admission into professional colleges. The CET Cell has made arrangements to post squads of plainclothes policemen around the examination centres and the hotels and lodges where students from other States stay during the tests. The aim is to prevent touts who take gullible students for a ride promising them "leaked" question papers for a high price. Students from other States have been found to be especially vulnerable. Last year two persons were caught for trying to sell fake CET question papers and the CET officials are determined to prevent such incidents from recurring. A meeting between the CET Cell officials and senior police officers held on Friday evening is known to have discussed to need for additional security at examination centres and lodging houses. Efforts will also be made to arrest those spreading rumours about leaked question papers. The VTU Education Fair, which will be held at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat from May 8 to May 11, coinciding with the CET, is expected to give students more information about engineering colleges in the State. Around 70 engineering colleges will be represented at the Education Fair, giving an opportunity for students to interact with the college personnel and get first-hand information about the colleges and their courses, admission formalities and fee structure. This will be of special use to students from other States appearing for CET as they can get all their information at one spot without having to contact a number of engineering colleges separately.
