In an interaction with the media just before returning to New Delhi after a brief visit to the city, the Prime Minister said that although Assembly elections were due soon in Goa there was no possibility of holding them early in Gujarat. He said the BJP had not performed up to expectations in the recent Assembly elections, but pointed out that it was gearing to do much better in the Goa polls.
The Prime Minister said all efforts were being made to arrive at a consensus with all political parties on the issue of electing the next Lok Sabha Speaker. Asked what he thought of the recent referendum in Pakistan giving a five-year term to its President, Pervez Musharraf, Mr. Vajpayee said he did not like this idea and added that ``this was also not a tradition with us.''
