Accept Omar's resignation, BJP tells PM

By Our Correspondent

JAMMU May 5 . The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party today asked the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to accept the resignation of Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Omar Abdullah, in the larger interests of the party in the State and accused the National Conference of sheer opportunism.

In a press conference here, party spokesman, Nirmal Singh, said the National Conference had always ditched the Union Government in every hour of crisis and needed to be shown the door.

Dubbing the National Conference as a stumbling block to peace in the State, Dr. Singh charged that whenever the Centre took any initiative to remove the alienation of the masses, the NC by one way or the other created hurdles.

On the resignation of Abdul Rashid Kabuli, Kashmir, in charge of the party, Dr. Singh said the party has not suffered any setback. For quite some time he was involved in anti-party activities and we had already decided to expel him, he added.

A two-day state working committee meeting was held at Akhnoor. The party discussed its strategy for the coming State Assembly elections and passed a number of resolutions. Dr. Singh said the party had urged the Union Government to take every possible step to conduct free and fair elections.

``We have cautioned the Centre against the nefarious design of the ruling dispensation of the State, which is bent upon rigging the coming elections'' he said.
