Ms. Swapna was married to Basavaprabhu Patil, a practising advocate in the Karnataka High Court and son of the Supreme Court judge, Shivaraj Patil. Police said Ms. Swapna, who had given birth to a male child a few days ago, hanged herself from a ceiling fan with a saree. The incident took place around 12.30 p.m. when she was alone at home. According to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), B.G. Jyothi Prakash Mirji, Ms. Swapna had been "depressed'' for some time. Police have registered a case. Ms. Swapna and Mr. Basavaprabhu, who were married in 1995, have a six-year-old daughter. Many senior Congress leaders, including MLAs and MPs, called on the bereaved family in the evening.
