Deuba vows to crush Maoists, seeks international assistance

Washington May 9. The Nepal Prime Minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, has vowed to crush the Maoist insurgency in the country seeking international support to fight the threat.

Mr. Deuba, who met the U.S. President, George W. Bush, at the White House expressed satisfaction over his visit and said the President showed ``tremendous goodwill'' towards Nepal to fight terrorism. Speaking at the Wilson Centre, he said ``most of my colleagues in Parliament and in my Cabinet are also soldiers of democracy. We will leave no stone unturned to fight again to liberate our people from terror and to ensure each and every one peace.''

Over 350 killed

In Kathmandu, the state radio said 104 soldiers and policemen were killed in the remote village of Gam, where fighting broke out late on Tuesday. Some 250 Maoist rebels were believed to have died. After the attack, the guerrillas took over the village. Army reinforcements had reached the area this morning and that a gunbattle to regain the area followed.
