Mercury soars

CHENNAI MAY 10. Mercury soared beyond the 43 degrees Celsius mark at Meenambakkam on Friday, making it the hottest day since the advent of the ``kathiri'' period. Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius (109.76 degrees Fahrenheit) and Nungambakkam 42.8 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature last year was on May 12, when Meenambakkam recorded 44.1 degrees Celsius.
