Chinese Foreign Minister visiting Pakistan

ISLAMABAD MAY 13. The Chinese Foreign Minister, Tang Jiaxuan, is arriving here on a two-day visit as the head of an eight-member delegation for exchange of views on a wide range of issues.

The visit of is significant as the U.S.-led campaign against terrorism that began in Afghanistan is slowly shifting to Pakistan and the latter is under pressure to crack down on extremism.

Mr. Jiaxuan will call on the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, and hold talks with the Foreign Minister, Abdul Sattar, besides senior officials in the Foreign Ministry.

He would leave for Kabul on Wednesday.

An official announcement said that Pakistan-China relations were characterised by warmth and sincerity as well as frequent high-level exchanges.

The Chinese Vice Premier, Wu Bangguo, visited Pakistan in March 2002. Gen. Musharraf paid a visit to China in December 2001.

The Chinese Premier, Zhu Rongji, visited Pakistan in May 2001.
