India, Singapore form joint study group

By Amit Baruah

SINGAPORE May 15. India and Singapore have set up a Joint Study Group (JSG) to go into the benefits of an India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). The JSG will be co-led by Rakesh Mohan, adviser to the Indian Finance Minister, and Lim Chin Beng, former Singapore Ambassador to Japan and currently a member of the Public Service Commission.

A statement from the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry said that the 10-member JSG would study the economic benefits of a possible India-Singapore CECA and propose strategies to realise these benefits.

The announcement follows an agreement between the Prime Ministers of India and Singapore, Atal Behari Vajpayee and Goh Chok Tong, during Mr. Vajpayee's visit to Singapore on April 8. The JSG would study the scope and structure of the CECA, including liberalisation of trade in goods, services and investments, and other disciplines of international trade. It would also explore fields of mutual interest such as life sciences and information and communications technology.
