A vote for the right

By Vaiju Naravane

THE HAGUE MAY 15. In a massive shift to the right, Dutch voters today gave a huge mandate to the conservative Christian Democratic Party — CDA — which won 29 per cent of the votes or 41 seats in the 150-member Parliament. They also gave a record number of seats to the three-month-old Pim Fortuyn List, which fulfilled prophecies of tremendous political gain despite, and perhaps because of, the murder of its maverick anti-immigrant leader, Pim Fortuyn. It won 26 seats to become the second largest force in Holland.

The Left-liberal alliance of the Labour Party (PVDA) and the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) suffered a significant defeat, with each winning 24 seats. It has been ousted from power after eight years.
