The Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, casting his vote for the local government elections in Colombo on Monday.
The results are to be declared on Tuesday, but there are few doubts that the voters will back the UNF, which has put the country's peace process with the LTTE on the fast track. Countrywide local elections were held in March, with the UNF winning all but five of the 222 councils. Elections to the 17 councils, for which people voted today, were delayed because of court cases challenging nominations. Local elections have been postponed indefinitely in the north-east due to the ongoing peace process with the LTTE.
