The bronze statue, sculpted by Gautam Pal, was gifted to the Warsaw University by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Unveiling the statue, Mr. Joshi said that the Mahatma's message of non-violence and brotherhood of humanity had become all the more relevant in the post-September 11 world terrorised by the threat of senseless violence, a press release issued here by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said. Mr. Joshi said that Poland was a truly democratic and free nation, which was about to reclaim its original place in the mainstream European thought and culture. He announced that the Indian Parliament would be happy to gift a collection of books by and about the Mahatma to the Warsaw library.
