LONDON: Pop superstar Madonna made her London stage debut (in the picture) to wild acclaim from a first night audience who applauded before she had delivered a single line. As the curtain rose, the pop icon was given a rousing reception in her role as an ambitious art dealer in Australian playwright David Williamson's hit play `Up For Grabs'. And that is what tickets were up for grabs on the black market for up to £500. For adoring fans, the tiny Wyndhams Theatre in the heart of London's West End was the perfect chance to get ``up close and personal'' with one of the world's most famous pop stars. Madonna, who last appeared on stage in New York in 1988, was critic proof before her London run even began all tickets have long been sold out for the Material Girl's appearance. The pop star cancelled all matinee performances of the play because of recording commitments. But her spokeswoman dismissed as ``rubbish'' press speculation that she had insisted on a raised stage to fend off fans.
