Polanski finally triumphs at Cannes

By Gautaman Bhaskaran

CANNES MAY 27. Roman Polanski's Holocaust drama, "The Pianist" took the Golden Palm Award here at Cannes last evening. A wonderful twist at the end elevates the film to another realm, and for Polanski, whose work "The Tenant" got a drubbing some 25 years ago at Cannes, this award must be a sweet revenge.

Aki Kaurismaki's "The Man Without a Past" walked away with the Grand Prize with its intensely human story of a man who finds a new meaning to life in the arms of a woman. The movie is quite unlike Kaurismaki's other works: it is positive even while capturing the soulful state of a man who has lost his memory. Kati Outinen, who plays the ladylove in the movie, clinched the Best Actress Prize.

Oliver Gourmet — who plays the father of an infant killed by a juvenile delinquent in "The Son" — was adjudged Best Actor for a performance that was warm and extremely touching. The jury, headed by the "Mullholland Drive" director, David Lynch, decided to honour two directors: Im Kwon-Taek (from Korea with his "Chihwaseon") and Paul Thomas Anderson (with his "Punch-Drunk Love") for the award in direction.

While Ken Loach of Britain bagged the Best Screenplay Prize for his "Sweet Sixteen" (which was so heavily accented that one needed English subtitles to understand the movie's English), Elia Suleiman clinched the Special Jury Award for his "Divine Intervention". India's Manish Jha got the Special Jury Prize for his short film, "A Very, Very Silent Film".
