Naidu vows to develop backward areas

WARANGAL MAY 27. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has said the Telugu Desam and his Government will not rest until backward areas are developed on a par with other parts of the State. Action plans are being formulated for the purpose.

In an oblique dig at the earlier Congress dispensations, he said certain areas remained backward due to neglect by the politicians or for historical reasons.

Development of the backward regions was the dominant and running theme of his 100-minute presidential address to the three-day Mahanadu of the Telugu Desam, which opened at this former capital of the Kakatiya kingdom on Monday.

`Backward areas' is an euphemism for Telangana which is in focus lately for the demand for separate statehood by outfits like Telangana Rashtra Samiti, Telangana Sadhana Samiti and a section of Congress MLAs. The choice of Warangal for the party's annual event is to drive home the message that the TDP is not blind to the aspirations of the region.

The Telugu Desam supremo touched upon a wide spectrum of issues and listed his Government's record in welfare, development, economic and other sectors and sought to contrast it with the "dismal'' performance of the Congress before. He dared the Congress to declare what it had done for the backward pockets. Much of the Government's external and other borrowings were spent for development works, with accent on backward areas. As a result, economic growth in these areas was more pronounced today, he said, adding that Khammam posted 9.5 per cent growth, Warangal 9 per cent, both in Telangana. Anantapur and Prakasam districts also registered good growth rates. Quality roads were laid in Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts at Rs. 100 crores.
