DURBAN: Herbert Johnston, one of the last living rescuers of survivors from the Titanic, has died at the age of 104 in South Africa, a newspaper reported on Thursday. Mr. Johnston died after going into a coma on Wednesday, the Durban-based Daily News said. British-born Mr. Johnston served as a 15-year-old apprentice on the passenger ship Carpathia in 1912 and helped rescue passengers who had survived the sinking of the Titanic, which had struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage to New York from Britain. The Carpathia carried 711 people to safety. The paper reported Mr. Johnston had recalled holding a nine-month-old baby girl during the rescue and 11 years ago that survivor sent him a letter of thanks. Mr. Johnston jumped ship when it arrived in South Africa. He served in both world wars. He is survived by three children, six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren (the photo shows the watch which stopped frozen in time the moment its owner plunged from the sinking Titanic into the icy waters of the Atlantic. The hands of the gold-plated Waltham watch, recovered from the body of John Gill , have remained at 3.21a.m., the moment the vessel disappeared into the ocean).
