DMK defers Chennai protest

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI June 4. With the Election Commission announcing repoll in 58 stations in the Saidapet constituency, the DMK today announced that the demonstration in Chennai scheduled for tomorrow, to protest against irregularities during the May 31 byelections, was deferred. The new date will be announced later, the party general secretary, K. Anbazhagan, said in a statement.

However, the demonstration in other places in the State would be held tomorrow as planned. This was because the party's demand for a repoll in the entire constituency had not been accepted.

Plea for anticipatory bail

Meanwhile, three DMK functionaries involved in poll work in the Saidapet have approached the Madras High Court for anticipatory bail in connection with an AIADMK election office attack case.

The petitioners are the former district secretary of AIADMK, Karuppasamipandian, the former AIADMK Minister, Raghupathy and the Chennai Corporation councillor, Kalyanasundaram.

The Kumaran Nagar police in Saidapet limits have charged the three, along with the Deputy Mayor of the Tirunelveli Corporation, Viswanathapandian, with pelting stones at the AIADMK office on May 31.

Meanwhile, Mr. Viswanathapandian, who was arrested subsequently, has filed a bail application in IX Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Saidapet.
