Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to Harkishan Singh Surjeet's article "Why a Left candidate" (June 18). To uphold our secular values and constitutional tenets, we do not necessarily need a constitutional expert or a politician but a person who is proud of our secular fabric and has firm faith in our Constitution qualities which the NDA Presidential candidate, Abdul Kalam, possesses in abundance. The article further says that people do not know Dr. Kalam's views on important questions, including Gujarat, but is that not the case with the Left candidate, Laxmi Sahgal, also? Dr. Kalam is a nationalist to the core and, given his credentials, will definitely live up to the people's expectations and bring honour to the high office he is due to hold.
Ranjan Pant,
Sir, The choice of Dr. Kalam is a matter of pride and rejoicing for the country. We have selected a scholar of international fame in the field of nuclear and space sciences. It is a matter of regret that people bring in religion as a factor for his selection and seek a secular label for the BJP on that account. It is derogatory to say that such an eminent person like Dr. Kalam was selected because of his religion.
J.M. Girglani,
