Bangladesh President resigns

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA: The Bangladesh President, Prof. A.Q.M. Badrudouzza Chowdhury (in the picture), has resigned, cutting short his five-year tenure to seven months, after the ruling BNP, whose founding secretary-general he was, demanded his exit. He sent his resignation letter to the Parliament Speaker, Zamiruddin Sircer, after the party stated that it had lost confidence in him and urged him to quit. The 72-year-old President was accused of "betraying'' the party cause and not showing "proper respect'' to the party's founder, Gen. Ziaur Rahman, during his 21st death anniversary observed on May 30 last. The President's sympathisers, however, said Prof. Chowdhury was only trying to "act neutral''. The authorities enforced tight security around the President's official house as he left the palace on Friday afternoon for a private home.
