Powell calls up Musharraf on interview

WASHINGTON JUNE 24 . Apparently annoyed and embarrassed by the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf's remarks that he has not given any commitment to permanently stop cross-border terrorism, the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, telephoned Gen. Musharraf who conveyed to Washington that he stuck to his promise.

The State Department spokesman, Richard Boucher, told reporters here today that Mr. Powell made the call after the Pakistan President's remarks were carried in an interview to Newsweek.

Acknowledging that the interview raised some questions, Mr. Boucher said Gen. Musharraf told Mr. Powell that he stood by his commitment that ending cross-border terrorism across the Line of Control was permanent. Asked whether the phone call was the result of the interview, he said it would be correct to assume that was one of the elements.— PTI
