By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JUNE 26. The fourth cellular service provider Hutchison Essar formally launched its operation in Chennai today under its unified Hutch brand. Addressing a press conference here, the Director of Hutchison Essar, Asim Ghosh, said Hutch would be a new cellular brand in Hutchison Telecom's family of international communications brands.

Mr. Ghosh said the company had invested over Rs.1, 200 crores in this phase of the Southern project. He said Chennai promised to be one of the important markets for Hutch, as the company saw tremendous potential to expand the subscriber base. At present, Chennai was the sixth largest cellular market in the country, with a subscriber base of 2.7 lakhs.

The Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Essar South, Rajiv Sawhney, said under the single tariff plan called `TalkFlexi' there would only be one rental of Rs. 275 applicable to all customers, which was as low as that of a fixed line connection.
