The party chief and the Union Labour Minister, Sharad Yadav, would chair the day-long meeting during which the State presidents, especially of the States of Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan would be asked to give their assessment of the party's relative strength and weaknesses, the party general secretary, K.C. Tyagi, said today. With the focus turning towards the elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the party has to have a special emphasis since its former party chief and former Union Minister, Maqbool Dar, has since left the outfit. Functioning under an ad-hoc arrangement, the party has to choose its State president in order to activate the party. The meeting may also be expected to hear a report from its senior leader, Ramjivan Singh, on the progress of the special committee of MPs set up by the party, the Samata Party and the Lok Janshakti to work on the process of unification. Although several rounds of meetings were held and an informal agreement was reached among the leaders of these three outfits of the erstwhile Janata parivar, there has been no visible progress. The Lok Janshakti snapped its ties with the National Democratic Alliance, while the other two remain part of the ruling BJP-led coalition. The move for unification gathered pace after the last Cabinet reshuffle when both Mr. Yadav and Mr. Paswan were shifted to lesser known Ministries. The meeting would also finalise plans for internal elections since the current term of office-bearers is scheduled to end by October this year and most of the States have completed their membership-drive.
