S. Sivaram to head NCL

NEW DELHI July 2 . The CSIR's National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) at Pune has got a new head. S. Sivaram, a polymer chemist of international repute, has been appointed the Director of the institution, which is the country's largest laboratory devoted to the area of chemical and related sciences.

A Ph.D. from Purdue University, U.S., where he was associated with the Nobel Laureate, Herbert C. Brown, Dr. Sivaram has 75 patent applications to his credit. He has been cited as inventor in 35 U.S. patents.

He has received several awards and honours including the Vasvik Award, FICCI Award, Om Prakash Bhasin Awards, and the Millennium Medal of the Indian Science Congress Association. His chequered career includes a long stint in the Indian Petrochemicals Corporation, where he joined as a research officer in 1973 and eventually rose to head its research centre. He joined the NCL in 1988. Among other things, he is in the Board of Directors of Asian Paints and Apcotex Lattices.
