UJC 'warning' to Hurriyat

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD JULY 2. The United Jehadi Council (UJC), a conglomerate of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir based militant outfits, tonight served a notice on the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) to either outrightly reject the coming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir or be prepared to face the "wrath" of the people in the State.

In a statement issued in Muzaffarabad, capital of PoK, the chairman of the Council and Hizbul Mujahideen chief, Syed Salahuddin, said that it was high time the Hurriyat took a clear stand against the "so-called election" in the valley and launch a campaign against it.

The UJC warning assumes significance in the wake of reports of a dilemma among some of the constituents of the Hurriyat on the position they should take vis-a-vis the Assembly elections. For instance, representatives of the Jamaat-e-Islami have been quoted in the Valley as saying that they would not "resist" the electoral process.

The UJC said that "if the Hurriyat failed to do so (oppose the electoral process) and showed reluctance under pressure, they would lose the position of being the political representatives of the Kashmiris.''
