Set-top boxes to view DD

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE July 5. Prasar Bharati will introduce cost-effective community set-top boxes, priced at around Rs. 1,500, for Doordarshan National channel viewers. The equipment will allow viewers to receive five or six Doordarshan regional channels from a single satellite. "The idea behind the initiative is to allow a wider reach of Doordarshan channels, especially to people in remote areas and villages. Since the North-eastern region has uneven landscape, the set-top box provides a better option compared to the LPTs being used now," U.R. Rao, Chairman, Prasar Bharati, and Chairman, Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE), told The Hindu. Speaking on the sidelines of the valedictory function of the Informatics Olympiad Training Camp-2002 here on Friday, Prof. Rao said the terrestrial Low Power Transmission (LPT) centres had failed to provide quality relay in remote areas (LPTs only allow the transmission of a single channel).
