Afghan leader shot dead

KABUL July 6. The Afghan Vice-President, Haji Abdul Qadir, was assassinated today close to his office here, a senior Government official said.

``There was an assassination attempt that was successful,'' the senior official said on condition of anonymity. He was shot dead near his Ministry of Public Works, a portfolio he was given last month by the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai.
