'Zardari eligible to contest elections'

ISLAMABAD JULY 6. Keeping the doors open for a political compromise with the former Pakistan Premier, Benazir Bhutto, the Musharraf Government has said that her imprisoned husband, Asif Ali Zardari, could contest the coming general elections, even as prosecutors filed fresh evidence in a corruption case against him.

The Prosecutor-General of the National Accountability Bureau, Raja Muhammad Bashir, said on Friday that Mr. Zardari, imprisoned for the past six years, was till date eligible to contest the general elections.

``No verdict in any of the references against him has so far been announced, so he is eligible to contest the elections,'' Mr. Bashir was quoted by the APP news agency as saying.
