Kolkata July 8. The former Chief Minister of West Bengal and Marxist leader, Jyoti Basu, turned 89 today with people from different walks of life felicitating him at his Bidhannagar residence.

Children gifted him flowers, chocolates, cakes and birthday cards and danced to celebrate the occasion. The State's Transport Minister, Subhas Chakraborty, also greeted the leader. A smiling Mr. Basu said he was happy that the children had come to greet him but said communists did not celebrate birthdays.

Mr. Basu stepped down as Chief Minister on health grounds in 2000 after steering the Left Front Government for 23 years, handing over the mantle to Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. — PTI
