Sharif, Benazir join forces?

By Atul Aneja

MANAMA (BAHRAIN) JULY 9. The former Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has denied meeting his predecessor, Benazir Bhutto, in Jeddah to forge an electoral understanding that could unseat the Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf.

Mr. Sharif was quoted by Asharq Al-Awsat, a daily from Saudi Arabia, as denying the press reports saying, "These reports are not at all true. I have not met Benazir Bhutto for quite a long time.'' A section of the Pakistani media had suggested that the two leaders had met when Ms. Bhutto visited the Saudi kingdom last week to perform Umrah.

Mr. Sharif and Ms. Bhutto are at present in exile. Mr. Sharif has been residing in Saudi Arabia since December 2000 under an understanding with Gen. Musharraf that he would not return to Pakistan in the next 10 years and would relinquish his re-entry into politics. In return, Mr. Sharif's 21-year jail sentence for hijacking and tax evasion would stand commuted. Ms. Bhutto has been out of Pakistan since 1998. Reports about a meeting between the two leaders assume importance in the light of the decree issued by Gen. Musharraf that effectively bars their comeback into politics.

According to diplomatic sources, Mr. Sharif, who had left Pakistan with 27 people including his father, brother and their families, is currently involved in steel manufacturing and computer software business in Saudi Arabia. While he may not have given up his political aspirations, Mr. Sharif's early return to Pakistan is unlikely, the sources add.
