The television station reported that Mr. Ecevit had appointed Sukru Sina Gurel as Dy. Prime Minister and had also made three new appointments to replace other Ministers who resigned yesterday with Mr. Ozkan. On Tuesday, State Ministers Hasan Gemici and Mustafa Yilmaz as well as three other lawmakers resigned. The resignations were a blow to Mr. Ecevit's efforts to hold on to office despite being hospitalised and suffering from various ailments during the past two months. They also called into question his party's drive to pass E.U.-required legislation, such as abolishing the death penalty and expanding rights for minority Kurds. But Mr. Ecevit appeared to be ignoring the pressure to resign and reshuffled his Cabinet on Tuesday, the Anatolia news agency reported. The political chaos came as Turkey took over leadership of the international peacekeeping force in Afghanistan and Washington considered military action against Iraq. Turkey borders Iraq and hosted allied aircraft during the Gulf War. Reuters, AP
