By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD JULY 11. An accountability court in Karachi today convicted Hakim Ali Zardari, father-in-law of the former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, in a corruption case and sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment and asked him to pay fine of Rs. 18.5 million. In case of default of payment of fine, he would have to undergo another two years of simple imprisonment.

Two days ago, an accountability court in Rawalpindi had sentenced Ms. Bhutto in absentia to three years rigorous imprisonment in an alleged case of corruption. Asif Ali Zardari, her husband, was one of the co-accused in the case.

Hakim Ali Zardari was also disqualified for 10 years from seeking or being elected, chosen and nominated as a member or representative of any public body or any statutory or local authority. He shall not be allowed to apply for or be granted any financial facility in the form of any loan or advances or other financial accommodation by any bank or financial institution owned or controlled by the Government. The court also ordered the confiscation of his house in Normandy, France.
