Susanth Krishna of Tamil Nadu swims to a new 50m backstroke record in the boys' group III at the 19th Sub-junior National aquatics championship in Bangalore on Thursday.
On a rainy day here, the honour of setting a lone meet record, however, went to Susanth Krishna of Tamil Nadu, who set a new mark in the 50 m back stroke for Group III boys, clocking 32.84s. Susanth, thus put in shade last year's best performance of 33.57 seconds by Gautam Gopal of Uttar Pradesh . The Chennai youngster, who turns 13 on July 31, broke free after 20m mark ahead of his team-mate S. Sateesh and Karnataka's N. A. Sandeep and raced on to hit the board in style. It was a maiden National record for Susanth, who is a ward of ace coach K. K. Mukundan and trains in Orca pool and a student of Chinmaya Mission School. Susanth, who did 33.74 in heats, said ``setting a record was not on my mind, since I topped in the heats and I felt I should maintain my position and I am happy I got a record in the bargain''. Susanth's exemplary show sparked a strong challenge from Karnataka swimmers, who then went to hog the show in the other races. M. S. Nivedita, a student of the local Baldwin Girls High school and a former Group IV national champion, set the tone, winning the 50m back stroke for Group III girls and she later won a silver in the 200m individual medley race in a tight finish, which saw team-mate Tejaswini clipping her challenge with a good turn and hot pace in the freestyle segment. The other gold for Karnataka came from V. Bharath Kumar, who topped in the 200 m individual medley race for Group III boys .he too warded off a strong challenge from teammate, J. P. Arjun to win in 2:32.59s. It was Bharath Kumar second gold, following his success in 50m butterfly on the opening day. Karnataka's other individual gold came from B. Neerja , who won the 200 m individual medley event for Group IV girls. Neerja paced herself well and took control with good burst in backstroke segment and she simply never looked back. Karnataka added two more golds to its kitty, bagging both the 4 x 50m freestyle relay golds in the group III boys' and girls' sections and silvers in Group IV section. Maharashtra won both the Group IV 4 x 50 freestyle relay golds. The lone individual gold came for Maharashtra's way when Veer Dhaval Khade from Kohlapur, won the 200m individual medley for Group IV boys. The spunky lad from Solapur, Rohan Anil Sambrani is fast emerging a good prospect in diving. The 14-year old, struck his second successive gold, when he won the 3m springboard with 313.10 points. Rohan's best dive was a reverse effort in `A' position with 2.0 degree of difficulty. Maharashtra swept four more golds in the diving competition at the PMSC pool. Besides Rohan, the other winners were Shardul Mollur ( Group IV boys), Trushna Patel ( Group II girls), Hruthika Shriram (Group III girls) and Poonam Sanjeev Shah (Group IV girls).
