By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI JULY 12. Eminent Carnatic vocalist and Padma Shri awardee, Mani Krishnaswami, died here on Friday following a heart attack. She was 72.

She is survived by her husband and a son. She was admitted to hospital due to cardiac trouble. The end came around 3 p.m., family sources said.

Mani Krishnaswami was born on February 3, 1930 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Though she wanted to study medicine, her parents decided to train her in carnatic music as she showed a natural flair for it. She had her training initially under Ellayya and Murugan of Vellore and, later, under Jalatarangam Venkatramanayya Chetty and Tirupparkadal Srinivasa Iyengar. After completing her SSLC, she came to Chennai and joined the Kalakshetra for the Sangeeta Sironmani course, where she was trained by Tiger Varadachari, Budalur Krishnamoorthi Sastrigal and T.K. Ramaswamy Iyengar. As a scholarship student, she learnt under the veteran Musiri Subramania Iyer.

A winner of several honours, she was awarded the Padma Shri in March. The titles `Sapthagiri Sangeetha Vidwanmani', `Sangita Kalanidi', `Sangeetha Kala Nipuna', `Kalaimamani' and `Sangeetha Choodamani' had been conferred on her.
