Gujarat job scheme to benefit 3.25 lakh youths

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD JULY 17. In a series of election-oriented decisions, the Gujarat Cabinet at its meeting here today held under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, accepted in principle four employment-generating schemes to provide temporary jobs to about 3.25 lakh youths.

About a lakh of youths would earn supplementary income under each of the ``Vishwakarma employment, Shramyogi and Gram Mitra schemes,'' while about 25,000 jobs would be created under the ``green guard'' project to protect environment in the urban centres.

Under the ``vidyalaxmi'' scheme about one lakh girl children in the comparatively backward areas would be provided with Narmada bond certificates of Rs.1,000 each for joining schools.

In addition, the Cabinet also approved the ``Nirmal Gujarat'' project to construct about 20,000 houses in various urban centres this year for resettling the families living in slums.

The Cabinet spokesperson and Urban Development Minister, I.K. Jadeja, said all the schemes to be introduced with immediate effect had been approved to run up to the end of the current financial year but could be extended further by the new government after the Assembly elections.

Some of the schemes had already been included in the current year's budget while for the remaining, money would be no constraint for their successful implementation.
